Tegafur is a tetrahydrofuranyl derivative of 5-fluorouracil which has been investigated in the treatment of a variety of malignancies. The drug is structurally related to both 5-fluorouracil and fluorodeoxyuridine; its chemical name is 1-(2-tetrahydrofuranyl)-5-fluorouracil. Tegafur is considered to be a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil, exerting activity after conversion to 5- fluorouracil in the liver.
