Turpentine, also known as spirit of turpentine, oil of turpentine, and wood turpentine, is a liquid extracted from live trees, mainly pine, through distillation of resin. It is used as a solvent and base material in organic synthesis reactions. Turpentine is a mixture of constituents. The type and amount of specific constituents is dependent on the type of pine tree, the geographical location of the trees, and the season of tree harvest. Turpentine produced in the United States is made up primarily of α-pinene (75 to 85%) with varying amounts of β-pinene (up to 3%), camphene (4 to 15%), limonene (dipentene, 5 to 15%), 3- carene, and terpinolene. The other constituents of note are low molecular weight sulfurcontaining constituents, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide and methyl mercaptan. Turpentine oil is used topically to treat rheumatoid and neuralgic disorders, toothaches, muscle pain, and disseminated sclerosis. Inhaling the vapors of turpentine oil can reduce thick secretions due to bronchial diseases.
Affygility Solutions has an occupational exposure limit (OEL) and control band assignment for this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This monograph also contains the acceptable daily exposure (ADE) value.
Please note: Due to the complexity and amount of studies regarding this compound—a Natural Health Product—increased cost is charged.
OEL Fastrac monographs are a cost-effective and convenient way to meet the requirements for PDEs (ADEs) contained in the EMA Guideline on setting health based exposure limits for use in risk identification in the manufacture of different medicinal products in shared facilities (EMA/CHMP/CVMP/SWP/169430/2012), as well as PIC/S and ANVISA requirements, and to obtain the following information:
