Vidarabine (also known as adenine arabinoside and ara-A) is a nucleoside antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces antibioticus. Vidarabine is indicated for the treatment of recurrent epithelial keratitis and acute keratoconjunctivitis due to herpes simplex virus (HSV) types l and 2. It is also effective in superficial keratitis caused by HSV which has not responded to topical idoxuridine or when toxic or hypersensitivity reactions due to idoxuridine have occurred. It is also indicated for the treatment of infections caused by a variety of viruses such as the herpes viruses, the vaccinia virus, and varicella zoster virus (VZV) (chickenpox).
