Zinc acetate is used as maintenance therapy to inhibit copper absorption from the intestine in patients with Wilson’s disease and in treatment of pregnant/pre-symptomatic patients. It is also used as an indirect food additive for use as a component of adhesives, as a source of zinc in nutritional supplements, and in over-the-counter medications including skin protectants. Zinc, the active component of zinc acetate, induces the production of copper binding protein in intestinal cells. The bound copper is eliminated in the feces and not absorbed systemically.
